Artisan Born handcrafts solid wood bar stools and counter stools in Jane, Missouri — built in the USA from full-thickness American black walnut and white oak, never veneer or particle board. Counter height vs. bar height: which wood stool do I need?
The two questions that decide every bar stool purchase are how tall your surface is and how much legroom you want. Measure from the floor to the underside of the countertop, then leave 10–12 inches for comfortable seating.
- Counter-height stools (26" seat) fit standard 36" kitchen counters and islands — the most common height in American homes.
- Bar-height stools (30" seat) fit 42" bars, pub tables, and raised islands.

Every Artisan Born stool is milled from full-thickness American hardwood in our Jane, Missouri workshop — solid black walnut or white oak, kiln-dried in-house. There is no veneer, no particle board, and no imported flat-pack: just American-made solid wood bar stools built to outlast the kitchen.
Walnut brings deep chocolate tone and dramatic grain; white oak offers a tight, even grain that takes color beautifully. Both are hardwoods chosen for daily, weight-bearing seating.

White oak is offered in eight hand-rubbed Rubio Monocoat finishes — Oak Clear Poly, Natural, White, Cotton White, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Onyx Black, and Modern Black — while walnut ships in a satin clear that lets its natural color shine. Rubio Monocoat is a zero-VOC, food-safe hardwax oil that bonds with the wood itself, so the grain always shows through and scratches buff out instead of chipping off.

How many bar stools fit my island?
Allow 26–30 inches of width per stool so shoulders and elbows have room. As a rule of thumb: a 6-foot island seats two comfortably (three snug), an 8-foot island seats three to four, and a 10-foot run seats four to five. Most customers order wood bar stools in sets of two, four, or six.

Care, finish maintenance & assembly
Rubio Monocoat finishes are wiped clean with a damp cloth and re-oiled spot-by-spot if ever needed — no full refinishing. Contour steel-frame stools arrive fully assembled; all-wood stools ship with legs pre-fitted for a 15-minute setup (a drill makes it easiest). Kept out of standing water and direct blazing sun, a solid wood bar stool lasts for decades.
Which height fits my counter?
36-inch kitchen counters and islands take 26-inch counter-height stools. 42-inch bars take 30-inch bar-height stools. Leave 10–12 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter for legroom.
Are these solid wood or veneer?
100% solid wood. Every seat is full-thickness American black walnut or white oak — never veneer, MDF, or particle board.

Bar stools come in three standard height ranges to match your counter or bar surface:
