Make Your First Impression Count
The entryway is the first room guests see and the last space you pass through before heading out into the world. It sets the tone for everything that follows — a quiet signal of how you live, what you value, and how you've chosen to furnish your home. At Artisan Born, we believe that signal should be unmistakable: solid wood, hand-finished, built in the USA, and made to last a lifetime.
Our entryway furniture collection is designed for people who want more than a place to drop their keys. These are pieces that anchor a space — that make a narrow hallway feel intentional, a foyer feel welcoming, and a mudroom feel organized without sacrificing beauty.
What Belongs in an Entryway?
A well-designed entryway typically includes a few key furniture types, and we build all of them with the same commitment to craft and material quality that defines every piece we make.
Entry Consoles and Sofa Tables — A solid wood console table is the backbone of most entryways. It gives you a surface for mail, keys, a lamp, or a vase of fresh flowers. Our console tables are built from solid American hardwood — primarily solid walnut and white oak — with steel bases available for those who want an industrial or modern edge. They range from slim 10-inch-deep profiles perfect for tight hallways to deeper 16-inch versions that can double as a display surface or even a small workspace near the door.
Entry Benches — Whether you're pulling on boots before a winter walk or setting down bags after a long day, a solid wood bench at the entry is one of the most functional pieces you can own. Our benches are built with the same joinery and finish standards as our dining and bedroom furniture — no shortcuts, no veneers, no particleboard. Just solid wood, shaped and finished by hand.
Shelving and Wall Storage — Vertical space is often underused in entryways. Our solid wood shelving brings warmth and function to walls that might otherwise go bare. Use them for baskets, books, or decorative objects that make the space feel lived-in and curated.
Sizes, Heights, and Proportions
Getting the proportions right in an entryway is everything. A console table that's too tall feels imposing; one that's too short looks like an afterthought. Here's how we think about sizing:
- Console table height: Most of our consoles sit between 30 and 36 inches tall — the sweet spot for a surface that's comfortable to use standing up and proportional to standard door heights.
- Console table depth: We offer depths from 10 to 18 inches. For hallways under 48 inches wide, we recommend staying at or under 12 inches to maintain comfortable passage.
- Bench height: Our entry benches typically sit between 17 and 19 inches — the standard seat height that makes sitting down and standing up effortless.
- Bench length: We build benches from 36 inches up to 60 inches wide, depending on your space and how much seating or surface area you need.
- Shelving: Wall-mounted shelves can be positioned at any height, but we typically recommend 60 to 72 inches from the floor for the top shelf in an entryway to keep things accessible without crowding the visual field.
Every piece we make can be customized to your exact dimensions. If your hallway is an unusual width or your ceilings are particularly high or low, we build to fit — not the other way around.
Wood Types: Solid Walnut and White Oak
We work primarily in two American hardwoods, and we've chosen them deliberately.
Solid Walnut is a rich, dark hardwood with a straight grain and a natural warmth that deepens over time. It's one of the most prized cabinet and furniture woods in North America — dense, durable, and beautiful without needing stain. In an entryway, walnut brings a sense of depth and sophistication. It pairs beautifully with brass hardware, warm lighting, and natural textiles. Our walnut pieces are finished with hand-applied oil or a low-sheen lacquer that protects the wood while letting its natural character show through.
White Oak is lighter in tone with a distinctive ray-fleck pattern that gives it a quiet, architectural quality. It's harder than red oak, more resistant to moisture, and has a neutral, versatile palette that works equally well in modern, Scandinavian, and transitional interiors. In an entryway, white oak reads as clean and considered — a wood that doesn't compete with the rest of your home but complements it.
Both species are sourced from American forests and milled domestically wherever possible. We don't use veneers, engineered wood, or imported substitutes. What you see is what the piece is made of — all the way through.
Colors, Finishes, and Customization
Our standard finishes include natural oil, matte lacquer, and satin lacquer — all hand-applied and hand-rubbed. We also offer custom stain matching for clients who need a specific tone to coordinate with existing floors, trim, or cabinetry.
Steel bases and accents are available in matte black, raw steel (with a clear coat), and brushed steel. These can be mixed with either walnut or white oak tops to create a look that's distinctly yours.
Unlike furniture stores that offer a fixed menu of SKUs in a fixed set of finishes, we treat every order as a custom project. You tell us the wood, the finish, the dimensions, and the base style — and we build it. This is what bespoke furniture means in practice: not just a choice between three colors, but a genuine conversation about what you need and how we can build it.
Bespoke vs. Furniture Store: What's the Difference?
Most furniture stores — even the ones that market themselves as premium — are selling you a product that was designed to be manufactured at scale, shipped in a flat box, and assembled with an Allen wrench. The wood is often a veneer over MDF. The joinery is staples and glue. The finish is a sprayed lacquer applied by machine in a factory overseas.
We do something different. Every piece that leaves our shop is built by hand in the USA, from solid domestic hardwood, using traditional joinery techniques that have been refined over generations. When you order an entryway console from Artisan Born, a craftsperson cuts the wood, shapes the joints, assembles the piece, and applies the finish by hand. There is no assembly required on your end. There are no veneers to bubble or edges to chip. There is just a piece of furniture that will outlast the house it's in.
This is what we mean when we say bespoke. It's not a marketing word for us — it's a description of how we work.
Caring for Your Entryway Furniture
Entryways take more daily wear than almost any other room in the house. Bags get dropped, keys get tossed, wet umbrellas get leaned against things. Here's how to keep your solid wood entryway furniture looking its best:
- Wipe spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Use a furniture wax or oil once or twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain the finish.
- Avoid placing wet items directly on the surface — use a tray or liner.
- Keep the piece out of direct sunlight where possible to prevent uneven fading over time.
Solid wood is a living material. It will develop a patina over time that makes it more beautiful, not less. Small marks and variations in grain are features, not flaws.
