The Comfort of a Chair. The Height of a Bar Stool.

A bar stool with a back changes everything. It turns a perch into a seat you actually want to linger in — whether that's a slow Sunday breakfast at the island, a long dinner with friends, or a home bar that gets real use. Bar stools with backs offer the support that backless stools can't, making them the right call for any spot where people sit for more than a few minutes.

At Artisan Born, our backed bar stools are handcrafted in our Missouri workshop from solid hardwood — no veneers, no shortcuts. Each one is made to order with the dimensions, finish, and leg style that fits your space.

Why Choose a Bar Stool with a Back

Backed stools are especially well-suited for:

  • Kitchen islands where family eats daily meals
  • Home bars and entertainment spaces where guests settle in
  • Households with kids or older adults who benefit from added support
  • Dining spaces where the stool doubles as a primary dining seat

Height & Fit

Like all bar stools, backed versions come in counter height (24–26"), bar height (28–30"), and extra-tall configurations. The back adds visual presence, so proportion matters — taller backs suit open, airy rooms while lower-profile backs work well in tighter or more casual spaces.

Available in Sets

Two to four stools is the most common range for kitchen islands and bar counters. Plan for 26–30" of width per stool so there's room to pull out, sit comfortably, and move freely. Backed stools can feel slightly wider visually, so spacing generously pays off.

  • Set of 2 — A great choice for a standard kitchen island or small bar counter.
  • Set of 4Our most popular option, which is ideal for a larger kitchen island or full dining bar.
  • Set of 6 — Best for long counters, open kitchens, and entertaining spaces.

Wood Species

Our backed bar stools are available in the hardwoods we trust most for furniture that sees daily life:

  • Walnut — Deep, warm tones with bold grain movement; a natural fit for modern, transitional, and mid-century spaces
  • White Oak — Lighter, more neutral, with a refined grain that adapts easily to farmhouse, Scandinavian, and contemporary interiors

Walnut Finish

Each walnut stool includes our Satin Clear Finish, a protective low-sheen coating designed to bring out walnut’s natural depth, color variation, and grain pattern without covering it up. It is durable, easy to maintain, and made for everyday use.

White Oak Finish Options

White oak bar stools are available in several finish options using Rubio Monocoat, a high-quality penetrating oil that bonds within the wood for lasting protection instead of forming a heavy surface layer.

  • Natural — A warm, nearly clear finish that brings out the natural tone, movement, and grain character of white oak.
  • Clear Satin — A smooth transparent finish with a soft satin glow, offering added protection while keeping the wood’s natural appearance visible.
  • White — A bright, clean finish that gives the stool a fresh look for modern, coastal, and farmhouse-style spaces.
  • Cotton White — A warmer off-white option with a softer, more muted appearance than standard white.
  • Light GreyA subtle grey finish that adds a calm neutral tone while still allowing the white oak texture to come through.
  • Dark GreyA richer grey tone that gives the stool a more modern feel while keeping the wood grain visible.
  • Matte BlackA smooth black finish with minimal sheen, offering bold contrast and a sleek contemporary look.

Bar Stool Leg Options

  • Matte Black — A classic black metal finish with a sleek, understated style that complements a wide range of hardwood seat colors.
  • Hammered Steel — A lightly textured finish with natural variation, giving the stool frame a durable, handcrafted look.
  • Satin Bronze — A warm bronze-toned metal finish that brings depth and contrast to the natural character of white oak.
  • Satin SteelA smooth, lighter metal finish that creates a crisp, refined look without making the stool feel too dark or visually heavy.
