The Stool That Anchors the Room

Black bar stools have a way of making everything around them look more intentional. They ground an island, sharpen a kitchen, and hold their own against bold cabinetry, open shelving, and statement lighting. The challenge is finding ones that look as good in person as they do in a mood board — and hold up to daily use without the finish flaking off by year two.

Ours are solid hardwood, finished in a Rubio Monocoat matte black. Not painted. Not wrapped. The color goes into the wood, not onto it.

What Sets These Apart

The difference between a solid hardwood stool and a hollow one is immediately obvious when you sit down. No flex in the legs. No drum sound when you set something on the seat. Just density, stability, and the kind of quiet confidence that comes from real material. The Rubio Monocoat matte black finish is tactile. It reads as black without looking plastic, and the grain stays visible underneath for those who look closely.

Common Configurations

  • Counter Height (24" – 26" seat): pairs with standard kitchen islands and counters at 35–37" tall
  • Bar Height (28" – 30" seat): fits bar-height tables and raised islands at 40–42" tall
  • Sets of 2: smaller islands, peninsulas, and breakfast bars
  • Sets of 4: the most common configuration for full kitchen islands
  • Sets of 6+: longer bar runs, open-concept kitchens, and high-volume entertaining spaces
  • Custom Height: available for non-standard counters or tables — reach out before ordering.

Bar Stool Leg Options

  • Matte Black — A timeless black finish with a clean, modern look. It pairs easily with both light and dark hardwood seats.
  • Hammered Steel — A textured metal finish with subtle variation. It adds a rugged, handcrafted feel to the stool base.
  • Satin Bronze — A warm bronze finish with soft metallic depth. It creates a rich contrast against the natural grain of white oak.
  • Satin Steel — A lighter metal finish with a smooth, refined appearance. It offers a clean and balanced look without feeling too dark or too heavy.

Wood Species & Feel

  • White Oak — dense and stable with tight grain and subtle ray flecking; the flecking stays faintly visible under the black finish, adding depth without distraction.

The Finish

Every stool is finished with Rubio Monocoat matte black — a plant-based hardwax oil that bonds at the molecular level with the wood fiber. No topcoat, no film, no plastic sheen.

The surface is matte, warm to the touch, and repairable spot-by-spot if it ever sees a scuff. It's the same finish used across our table and shelf collections, so matching pieces across your space is straightforward.

Where They Work Best

  • White or light grey kitchens where black seating creates sharp contrast.
  • Open shelving kitchens with black hardware and fixtures.
  • Industrial and loft-style spaces with exposed brick, concrete, or metal.
  • Paired with a walnut or white oak dining table for a cohesive dark-accent look.
  • Home bars and butler's pantries where a bold, durable finish really matters.

Made to order in our Missouri workshop. If you're matching to an existing Artisan Born piece, let us know the species and finish — we'll make sure everything reads as a set.
