The Right Height Changes Everything.

Most seating problems at a kitchen island come down to one thing: the stool is the wrong height. Counter height bar stools with a seat between 24" and 26" — are built for standard kitchen counters and islands that sit at 35" to 37" tall. Get that fit right, and the whole kitchen works better. Get it wrong, and you're either hunching or perching.

Our counter height stools are made from solid hardwood in our Missouri workshop. No hollow cores, no veneered legs, no shortcuts on the joinery. Just well-proportioned seating built to live at your counter for years.

How to Confirm Counter Height Is Right for You

Measure from the floor to the top of your counter or island surface. If it falls between 35" and 37", counter height seating is your fit. You want roughly 9" to 12" of clearance between the seat and the underside of the counter — enough room to sit comfortably without your knees hitting the overhang.

Common Configurations

  • Sets of 2: narrow islands, peninsulas, and breakfast bars with limited overhang
  • Sets of 4: the standard for most kitchen islands — comfortable for a family of four without crowding
  • Sets of 6: longer islands and open-concept kitchens designed for gathering
  • Custom quantities: available for commercial kitchens, vacation rentals, and large-format spaces
  • Seat height: standard 24" – 26"; custom heights available for non-standard counters

Wood Species & Feel

  • White Oak — hard, stable, and visually interesting; the tight grain and ray flecking hold up beautifully under daily use and look better with age
  • Walnut — Rich, dark, and deeply figured. A bold statement piece in any room.

Wood Finish Options

All white oak stools are finished with Rubio Monocoat — a plant-based hardwax oil available in natural, white, cotton white, light grey, dark grey, and matte black. The finish penetrates the wood rather than coating it, so the surface stays tactile and repairable. If you're matching to an existing Artisan Born table, shelf, or stool, we'll align the finish batch to keep everything consistent.

All walnut stools are finished with a satin clear finish magnifying and protecting the wood's natural beauty.

Walnut Finish

Every walnut stool ships with our Satin Clear Finish — a durable, low-sheen protective coat that enhances the natural color and grain without masking it. Easy to clean and built for daily use.

White Oak Finishes

White oak bar stools offer a wider range of finish options using Rubio Monocoat, a premium penetrating oil finish that protects from within the wood rather than sitting on top of it.

  • Natural — A clear, warm finish that showcases white oak’s natural color variation and distinctive grain.
  • Clear Satin — A smooth, transparent finish with a soft satin sheen that protects the wood while keeping the natural white oak grain and color visible.
  • White — A crisp painted finish that brings a fresh, bright feel to modern, coastal, or farmhouse interiors.
  • Cotton White — A gentler off-white tone with added warmth for a softer, more subtle look than standard white.
  • Light Grey — A soft neutral grey that tones down the wood while still allowing the oak texture to remain visible.
  • Dark Grey — A richer grey finish that adds modern depth while preserving the character of the wood grain.
  • Matte Black — A low-sheen black finish that creates bold contrast and a clean, contemporary appearance.

Stool Leg Options

  • Matte Black — A clean black metal leg finish with a bold, modern look. It creates crisp contrast against white oak, walnut, maple, and other solid hardwood seats.
  • Hammered Steel — A textured metal finish with subtle surface variation and industrial character. It gives the stool base a handcrafted feel while maintaining a sturdy, refined appearance.
  • Satin Bronze — A warm bronze finish with soft metallic depth. It enhances the natural grain of white oak and brings a richer, more elevated feel to the overall design.
  • Satin Steel — A smooth, lighter-toned metal finish with a polished appearance. It offers a bright, balanced look that works well with modern, transitional, and industrial-style bar stools.

Where They Work Best

  • Standard kitchen islands and breakfast bars at 35–37" height
  • Open-concept kitchens where the stools are visible from the living space
  • Homes where the dining table and island seating need to feel like a matched set
  • Spaces where bar height feels too tall and standard chair height feels too low

Every stool is made to order. Lead times vary — contact us if you're working toward a specific date or need help confirming the right seat height for your space.
